Design has been primarily regarded as a problem solving practice closely linked to the needs of the industry. Speculative & Critical Design (SCD) is a method that uses design to address ‘wicked problems’, by raising critical questions, provoking debate and imagining alternative futures. Speculative Design can be used as a lens to uncover new questions that expand the space of possibility using a fictitious approach. In this workshop we will cover core concepts and terminology of SCD by engaging in a playful and participatory exercise. Through an exchange of ideas and strategies, participants will learn to prototype scenarios, open new perspectives and explore implications of desirable and undesirable futures by imagining new products, systems and services.
This workshop is open to participants from a range of disciplines: architecture, art, design, policy, urbanism, technology, social sciences, media and cultural studies, who wish to develop a critical sensibility towards design. No particular level of practical or technical experience is necessary, but some design experience will be useful.
Wanna turn your ideas into products?
That process starts with putting them on paper first! This workshop will help you do that, and allow you to solve problems and figure out details along the way.
Pre-requisite: a rudimentary understanding of perspective drawing
.
Materials you need:
1) Pen
2) Pencil
3) 15-20 A4 sheets of paper
Design has rapidly transformed over the last few decades. Designers are not just designing products (objects, garments, posters or structures); they’re also designing services, systems, protocols and other intangible artefacts. This workshop introduce participants to this expanded field of design, and equips them with the tools to operate in this new paradigm.
This masterclass consists of a talk about a late approach towards designing user experiences and talk about different UX frameworks, for example, information architecture. This will be followed by an interactive design section where students will ask questions as well.
Materials you need:
1) A Sketch pad
2) A pencil.
What to expect:
5 Ws and the H of documentation to empower your team’s design process.
– What are design docs
– Why are they a great addition to your toolkit
– Who / Which teams should you collaborate with to create one
– When to create them
– Where and how to create one for your next project
This masterclass will be the most relevant for:
– New entrants trying to get a better understanding of the design process
– Juniors, if they’re part of larger design teams
– Individuals working with cross-functional peers
– Anyone who identifies themself as a facilitator and wants to learn ways to improve
collaboration.
